Statement: The 88 Generation Students on the Commemoration of
the 24th Anniversary of “The August 8, 1988 (8.8.88) Uprising”

1. The 8.8.88 Uprising was the most important mass demonstration for the demand of political, economic and social reforms in the history of our country.
2. The 8.8.88 Uprising was not a movement of any particular national race or group, but a collective effort made by all peoples of our country, including ethnic nationalities, for change.
3. Present political, economic and social affairs changes in our country directly result from the 8.8.88 Uprising.
4. We believe that every citizen is critical to achieving democracy and human rights, the emergence of a market economy that successively and fairly benefits all, and the progression of our country on the substantial journey towards national reconciliation.
5. The most fundamental requirements for the development of the country are internal peace and equality among all ethnic nationalities. We believe we will achieve these requirements with political dialogue and effective cooperation amongst all ethnic nationalities.
6. We also believe that releasing all remaining political prisoners and the honorable return of all of our citizens in exile are important tasks in rebuilding and reforming the country.
7. With this statement, we bow our heads and honor our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the people throughout the 8.8.88 Uprising. They all will be in our hearts and minds forever.
8. We urge all citizens of our country to redouble their efforts for national reconciliation, equality among all ethnic nationalities, democracy and human rights, and the country’s development with the spirit of the 8.8.88 Uprising.
