NYC: Save the date (06/18/2011) - Celebrate Daw Suu's 66th Birthday in NYC


Hello Everyone,

You, your family and friends are warmly invited to attend a very
special birthday event to honor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi - Nobel Peace
Laureate, former political prisoner, and nonviolent pro-democracy
leader of Burma, next Saturday, June 18th.

Daw Suu spent more than 15 years in detention until she was released
on November 13, 2010 and for the very first time in more than seven
years, she will be spending her birthday FREE! This inspirational and
celebratory event is uniquely planned not only to celebrate her 66th
birthday, but to also present an exclusive experience to get to know
"The Lady" at a personal level.

Tentative program:
- Opening remarks by Saya Maung Swan Yi, a prominent Burmese poet,
long-term pro-democracy activist, and close friend of Daw Suu
- Poetry readings in Burmese and English
- Sharing of personal experiences and stories by former political
prisoners and friends of Daw Suu
- Video of selected Daw Suu speeches in Burmese and English
- Closing remarks from Elaine Pearson, Deputy Director of Human Rights

Educational displays will include
- A 40-foot timeline of Daw Suu’s life
- Astounding and rare portraits of Daw Suu by various artists
- Images and biographies of political prisoners, courtesy of
Association for Assistance of Political Prisoners - Burma

The event is organized by pro-democracy activists from the Burmese
community and concerned citizens of New York. The event is free and
open to the public. Traditional Burmese appetizers and refreshments
will be served.
